With a summer of big sports events here in San Diego County (the U.S.
Open) and in China (the Olympic Games), the Fair’s 2008 theme is
“Summer of Sports,” a celebration of sports and athletes in San Diego
County and around the world. The theme will be reflected in a newly
created exhibit presented by Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics. The exhibit
will be located in the Summer of Sports Exhibit building, just west of
the O’Brien Gate, and in games and activities throughout the
Fairgrounds. Both traditional and nontraditional sports will be
celebrated. A different sport will be highlighted each day in the
exhibit with interactive games and demonstrations, and appearances by
Olympic athletes including Shannon McMillan and Steve Scott;
professional athletes such as former Padre Tony Gwynn, retired boxer
Julio Cesar Chavez and jockey Julie Krone; and amateur athletes.
The Fair has partnered with the United States Olympic Committee, San
Diego Hall of Champions, the California Surf Museum, Upper Deck and
many other organizations to display extensive collections of collegiate
and professional sports collectibles, as well as historic Olympic
memorabilia.
