Trev's Pick of the day (Kings of Convenience)

Posted: Friday, Oct 10, 2008

This was one of the hardest "picks of the day" to date. I am a HUGE fan of this band - Kings of Conveniece - and had a tough time picking my favorite song. First off, if you like what you hear, I do plan on playing more material from them in upcoming picks of the day. The Kings of Convenience are from Norway, which really shows in their lyrics, which are primarily in english... BROKEN english - which I thoroughly enjoy!

This song is actually a collaboration with Royksopp, and is a wonderful mix. The song is called "I don't...

Trev's Pick of the Day (Frou Frou)

Posted: Thursday, Oct 9, 2008

Today's pick of the day is Frou Frou, who were comprised of the English music duo: Imogen Heap, and Guy Sigsworth. They released only one album - Details - which was a very new spin on the chilled-out, Enya-esk electronica, postal service-y sound. Is that enough of a comparison?

Anyway, I always get into the groove with this song, and feel like it's a good mood changer - especially if you're glum. And guys... the ladies love it. HAHAHAHA! POW POW!

Here's the video:

Trev's Pick of the Day (Mason Jennings)

Posted: Wednesday, Oct 8, 2008

Mason Jennings was born in Hawaii, and perhaps shares part of the same attitude that Jack Johnson and other beach-dwellers grew up with. His music is very unique, along with his voice, and is heavily melodically driven.

Some people say his voice takes a while to get used to, which might be true in more cases than one, but for me, the unique vocals, and simplistic style really mesh well with a warm afternoon with a post-surf buzz going and a cold beer in hand.

Trev's Pick of the Day (Marcy Playground)

Posted: Monday, Oct 6, 2008

Today's band is Marcy Playground, from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The song, as you probably guessed, is the bands greatest hit - "Sex and Candy". Though the band has had several singles, and continues to make music, none has stood out in the mainstream media as much as their initial claim to fame.

I remember watching VH1, and listening to the song very quietly... when my Mom asked me from the other room... "What is that song saying?!" I responded quite calmly... "I smell lots of candy." Oh, such a little liar. Taking their influence from bands like Nirvana, and (artistically)...

Trev's Pick of the Day (10cc)

Posted: Friday, Oct 3, 2008

Today's band is 10cc, a pop group from the UK. The group had a number of hits, though this song, "Dreadlock Holiday" was the only reggae-esk tune to drop big numbers on the charts. The song hit No. 1 in the UK, and was featured on several UK sitcoms, as well as major motion pictures.

I came accross the song on the Snatch soundtrack, in the scene where three of the crooks, (the whole movie is full of crooks) are planning their getaway, and are listening to the song on the car stereo.

You might also remember the song: "The Things we...

Trev's Pick of the Day (Jimmy's Chicken Shack)

Posted: Thursday, Oct 2, 2008

Today's band is Jimmy's Chicken Shack, from Annapolis, Maryland. The song is "Do Right", and was on their 1999 album, 'Bring your own Stereo'. Jimi Haha has said that the entire record is about his ex-girlfriend from New Jersey.

I remember having to sneak this CD home because of the explicit lyrics sticker on the bottom, i was such a rebel. Did I ever tell you guys about the time my folks made me trade in 40 oz. to Freedom for Chumbawumba.... I don't want to talk about it.

I hope you enjoy the song! Tell me what memories you have from...

Trev's Pick of the Day (Spacehog)

Posted: Wednesday, Oct 1, 2008

Today's band is Spacehog, is from Leeds, England and is heavily influenced by Queen, David Bowie, and T-Rex. The song is called: 'In the Meantime', and was the biggest hit off their first album, resident alien.

Spacehog's first album remains one of my all time favorite albums, and includes several interesting styles and sounds. Here's a few interesting facts about the album:

Resident Alien's secret track "Was it Likely?" consists entirely of Royston Langdon making strange sounds with his vocal chords.
Most of Resident Alien's basic tracks were cut live in a barn out in Woodstock, NY. It was intended to give the...

Trev's Pick of the Day (Os Mutantes)

Posted: Tuesday, Sep 30, 2008

Today's band is "Os Mutantes" from Brazil - which translates to The Mutants. The song is called "A Minha Menina". I remember the first time i heard the song, with its strange intro, and old sounding recording. I immediately starting nodding my head to the side with the tropicalia beat, but then when the distorted one string guitar solo kicked in, I knew I loved the song. (SIDE NOTE... you may recognize the song from a 2008 McDonalds commercial called "Victory".)

The most interesting thing about this band, is that they are sited as influences for these bands: The...

Trev's Pick of the Day (Nerf Herder)

Posted: Monday, Sep 29, 2008

Today's band is "Nerf Herder" from Santa Barbara, California. They take their name from the scene in "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" when Princess Leia calls Han solo "...a stuck up, half-witted, scruffy looking Nerf Herder!" (SEE BELOW FOR THE FULL DESCRIPTION OF A NERF HERDER)

The song is "Van Halen", and was possibly the bands biggest hit. You might also know them from the Theme song to Buffy the Vampire Slayer... what???!! (Check for yourself if you don't believe me! Buffy Theme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO6gLWA0hhI)

The band was very popular in Santa Barbara -...
